Owens Corning vs. CertainTeed Shingles
Which Is Right for Your Tennessee Home?
by Professional Roofers, Inc.

If you’re planning a roof replacement in Middle Tennessee, chances are your final decision is going to come down to two brands: Owens Corning or CertainTeed. Both are industry leaders. Both make excellent shingles. And Professional Roofers, Inc. is certified at the highest level of both — OC Platinum Preferred Contractor and CertainTeed ShingleMaster.
So which one should you choose? Here’s our honest breakdown.
Owens Corning — Product Line Overview
OC’s residential shingle lineup has three tiers most homeowners will consider:
-
Oakridge (Entry Tier): A solid, reliable architectural shingle at a great price point. 30-year limited warranty. The most common shingle in Middle Tennessee for budget-focused projects. Does the job well.
-
Duration (Mid Tier): OC’s most popular shingle. Features SureNail Technology — a reinforced nailing zone that significantly improves wind resistance (up to 130 mph). Better dimensional look than Oakridge. This is what most of our reps recommend for standard residential installs.
-
Duration Flex (Premium): Duration with enhanced impact resistance (Class 4 IR rating). Engineered specifically for areas with hail risk — which includes most of Middle Tennessee. May qualify for a homeowners insurance discount.
CertainTeed — Product Line Overview
CT’s lineup is similarly tiered:
-
Landmark (Entry Tier): CT’s workhorse shingle. Comparable price point to OC Oakridge. Solid performance, clean look, 30-year limited warranty. Extremely popular in Williamson County.
-
Landmark Pro (Mid Tier): A heavier, more dimensional shingle with a richer aesthetic. Landmark Pro has a noticeably premium look that photographs well and complements upscale neighborhoods. This is one of our reps’ top picks for retail jobs in Brentwood and Franklin.
-
Belmont (Premium): CT’s luxury line. A very heavy, ultra-dimensional shingle that mimics slate. High-end pricing, high-end look.
How Do They Compare?
Warranty
Both brands offer strong material warranties when installed by their certified contractors. The key word is certified. A PRI install of OC or CT comes with the full manufacturer warranty coverage — because we hold the certifications (OC Platinum, CT ShingleMaster) that unlock those enhanced warranties. A non-certified contractor installing the same shingle gets a lesser warranty. The contractor matters as much as the brand.
Aesthetics
CertainTeed tends to have a heavier, more dramatic dimensional look — particularly with Landmark Pro. Owens Corning has an excellent color selection and a slightly cleaner, more uniform aesthetic. There’s no wrong answer here; it comes down to your home’s style and what your HOA (if any) specifies.
Wind Resistance
OC Duration’s SureNail Technology gives it a notable edge in wind performance tests. For homes in more exposed locations or areas with frequent high winds, Duration is worth the modest price premium over Oakridge. CT Landmark Pro is also solid on wind resistance.
Hail Performance
OC Duration Flex is purpose-built for hail resistance and carries a Class 4 Impact Resistance rating. If you’re specifically trying to maximize hail protection — or get an insurance discount — Duration Flex is the one to ask about. CertainTeed’s equivalent is the Landmark IR.
Price
At equivalent tiers, OC and CT are very similar in price. Neither brand is dramatically cheaper than the other. What moves the needle is tier selection, not brand.
What Does PRI Recommend?
Honestly — both are excellent, and we’re not going to tell you one is definitively better than the other. That would be misleading. Here’s how we actually think about it:
-
For insurance replacement jobs, many of our reps lean toward OC Duration. Adjusters are very familiar with it, it’s widely accepted, and the SureNail warranty is well-documented in claim paperwork.
-
For retail jobs (especially in Brentwood, Franklin, and Williamson County), several reps prefer CT Landmark Pro for its dimensional look on higher-end homes.
-
For hail-prone areas or homes that had significant hail damage, Duration Flex or CT Landmark IR are worth the premium.
The recommendation we’re most confident making: pick a certified contractor over a specific brand. A Platinum Preferred install of OC Oakridge will outperform a generic install of a premium shingle every time. PRI gives you best-in-class installation on both brands — so the choice really does come down to what you prefer.
